Sony win the rights to Angry Birds movie
Back in December last year, there was confirmation that the Angry Birds movie would get its release in 2016, with Rovio funding the movie, while Despicable Me producer John Cohen and former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel were both attached. Now, reports have confirmed that Sony have won the distribution rights for the Angry Birds film.
Sony Pictures co-chairmen, Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal, have admitted that they are delighted to have acquired the Angry Birds movie, saying, "Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate. said on Wednesday (May 15)."
They added, "There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table. We're thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together."
The Angry Birds game has developed a huge following, since its launch as a mobile game back in 2009. A number of big name stars are self-confessed Angry Birds addicts, including Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski, who once had a minor Angry Birds breakdown on Twitter.
Angry Birds the movie will open in 2016.
