Sir Alex Ferguson to retire as Manchester United manager this summer?
It seems that there is a new rumour going around that Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to retire as Manchester United manager this summer. The Telegraph claim that Sir Alex has decided to call time on his Manchester United career, due to his hip operation this summer.
However, while these reports are circulating, Sir Alex certainly did not seem like he has any plans to retire, if his program notes from the Chelsea game were anything to go by. Ferguson said, "I certainly don’t have any plans at the moment to walk away from what I believe will be something special".
He added, "This team of champions is not going away - we are here for the long ride. We will get better and if we apply ourselves in our normal fashion, I see our 20th league title as nothing but the start of another decade of success. Whether I will be here to oversee another decade of success remains to be seen, but I certainly don't have any plans at the moment to walk away from what I believe will be something special and worth being around to see."
The Telegraph's report mainly points to the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson is having his hip operation just a few weeks before the start of the new season. Yet Ferguson has made it clear that his decision to have his operation at that time, is so that he can attend Manchester United's tour of Asia. It would seem strange for him to take the club on their summer tour if he had plans to retire.
Do you think Sir Alex Ferguson will retire as Manchester United manager?
UPDATE: Manchester United have confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season.
