Gemma Arterton discusses her accent

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters actress Gemma Arterton is considered by many to be a rather posh young woman. However, Gemma has admitted that she used to have an almost cockney accent but her accent became more posh once she started going to drama school.

Arterton explained to Metro, "I grew up in Kent with an Estuary accent so strong it was almost Cockney. I was all like, 'Wot the f**k you lookin' at?' Then I went to drama school where they told me that it wouldn't do me any favours and they teach you RP [received pronunciation] instead."

While Gemma Arterton has had a very successful career and has a lot to thank her drama school background for, she claims that her father was less than impressed when he first heard her new, well spoken accent.

She added, "I remember going to my dad's house for Sunday roast and I said something like, 'May you pass the ketchup?', and he went, 'F**k off. I'm not passing you nuffing when you speak like that. What are you, Mary Poppins or somefing?'"

Gemma Arterton can currently be seen on the big screen in the movie Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and will be seen again later in the year, in the movie Runner, Runner, which will be released on September 27 in both the US and the UK.
