Divergent tattoo designs explained by artist

There has been a lot of anticipation surrounding the up coming, big screen adaptation of the hit Veronica Roth novel Divergent, which will open later in the month. Many people have been comparing the Divergent movie to that of The Hunger Games film, as there are a lot of similarities between the two, but there are also plenty of differences between them too.

From all the promotional material that we have been given so far, there are clearly a lot of interesting tattoo designs on the film, which are very noticeable from the posters and the trailers that we have seen. Now, Brad Wilder, who is the head of the makeup department for the Divergent movie, has opened up about the tattoos, explaining the ideas behind them.

Wilder explained to MTV News, "They refer to them in the movie as blood tattoos. There's a scene in there where [Tris] has a raven [tattooed] on it's a patch that's kind of applied over her collarbone and it looks like a kind of a hologram with a brightly colored light tube that runs to this device. Tori pushes that onto her collarbone and then within a few seconds pulls it off and there's the tattoo."

The Divergent cast includes the likes of Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate WinsletAshley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Tony Goldwyn, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer. Divergent is directed by Neil Burger, based on the screenplay developed by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor from the Veronica Roth novel. Divergent will open on March 21 in the US and April 4 in the UK.
